Ada Lovelace was not yet twenty-four and was being tutored in mathematics by one of the most renowned logicians of his day, Augustus De Morgan, of the University of London. He had married Lady Byron’s friend Sophia Frend, daughter of Lady Byron’s old Cambridge tutor. “Calculus,” Ada wrote to her mother, had become “King.” Mathematics might very well have taken precedence over husband William King. At approximately the same time as Lady Byron leased that house in Paris on 24 Rue de Rivoli for the 1840–41 season, Ada was finding her calling.
